What is a CVT Transmission?

A continuous variable transmission (CVT)Is a variation of an Automatic Transmission. The goal of its designers was to create a transmission that was more fuel efficient and create a transmission that drove smoother. Gear changes are achieved through a range of gear ratios via belts and pulleys and create a smoother transmission in many cases. CVT Transmission are popular in many smaller family cars

Signs your CVT Transmission may be starting to fail

Engine light warning on Dashboard stays on

There are many signs a transmission is wearing. One of the easiest to ignore is a check engine light with a transmission Code. it is easy to think you’re vehicle might be having some sort of minor electrical fault to make this light turn on but it needs to be taken seriously.

The vehicle might still be driving as it normally does your vehicle’s computer has identified an internal problem and it’s trying to warn you. If you experience any sort of warning light call First Gearboxes and we’ll advise you as to your best course of action. Better than carrying on and then ending up with a significant repair bill.

Oil Leakage

A leak below the transmission area is a sign of a problem. Without enough transmission fluid wear and damage quickly sets in with transmission overheating leading to transmission failure.

Unusual Vibrations

Another common sign is a vibration at different speeds that you can’t identify or delay when you push the transmission lever into D (Drive) or R (reverse)where the transmission appears disconnected from the motor and then is a delay that moves forward or back. This is another sure sign of a transmission problem.

CVT Transmission slipping

The most common problem and easiest to identify for all transmissions including CVT transmissions is when you are for example sitting at the lights, you put your foot on the accelerator to move forward and the engine revs and you either move forward very slowly or not at all. This is called transmission slipping. Again if you find yourself in this situation it is upsetting but the best thing you can do is just get on the phone and First Gearboxes will advise you what to do and if need be come and pick you and your vehicle up.

Burning Smell

If you sense a burning smell when you are near your car, it can be a sign of an overheating transmission. The burning smell can also be caused due to the transmission fluid leaking into the exhaust system. If the burning smell is caused by the leak of transmission fluid to exhaust system, it should be addressed immediately.

CVT Transmission Repair Options

1. In-House CVT Transmission Rebuild

CVT transmissions unfortunately often getting CVT transmission parts can be challenging. This limits whether we can rebuild a CVT transmission in-house as we often would with other types of transmission. In some cases, it can be done but usually, it is not possible - sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

2. Reconditioned CVT Transmissions

This is the best choice! A reconditioned CVT transmission in most cases providing the maintenance is kept up will usually last the remaining life of the vehicle and usually comes with a comprehensive warranty. Availability is limited to certain makes and models so call us now to determine if this is an option.

3. Dealer CVT Transmission

This option needs to be carefully considered. Sourcing a new transmission from a dealership and be expensive and you need to compare apples with apples when comparing Warranties. Sometimes Reconditioned Transmission units offer more warranty protection than dealership warranties. We’ll help you with this and advise you if the worst comes to worst. For now, just trust that you are in safe hands at First Gearboxes.

4. Used CVT Transmissions

Buying a used CVT transmission is in our opinion, not the best option. While it may be cheaper, you know nothing of the history of the donor transmission. You don't know whether it has been treated well or maintained. While most Vehicle parts companies supply 3-month warranties with parts of this nature it’s still playing with fire and your transmission could fail 6 months later with no comeback and then you would be lumbered with another large repair bill. Better to take it on the chin and go for the reconditioned option. If you’re selling the car it’s also the better thing to do for the next owner.
