in most cases except for rarer models a second-hand manual or Automatic transmission can be purchased from an Auto dismantler or Vehicle Wreckers Yard. On the plus side, second-hand transmissions are much less expensive than a rebuilt or reconditioned Transmission. On the negative side, you have no idea about the condition of the second-hand transmission, it could be good or it could also be in the last year of its life having not been maintained or used for a lot of heavy towing so it’s a lottery. Most Wreckers give a 3 months guarantee with second-hand parts but really the last thing you want is a transmission that blows up six months later outside the warranty date. Warranties do vary. If you can find a certified remanufactured transmission with a warranty that’s a good option if you're on a tight budget.
What is the difference between a reconditioned Automatic Transmission and a Rebuilt Manual or Automatic Transmission?
In industry language, the terms rebuilt and reconditioned are often used in a way that’s inaccurate when some people say rebuilt they really mean reconditioned and the other way around. To clarify this, they are not the same thing. When a transmission is built it is overhauled which means replacing worn and faulty parts. Your vehicle’s transmission is taken apart, and the Solenoids are tested and either cleaned or replaced. Other parts that need to be replaced often come in a kit of parts that typically need to be replaced on a worn transmission applicable to your make and model vehicle.
When your transmission is rebuilt the technician will inspect the working parts and those that are not totally worn out are retained. We use our own judgment as to whether any partially worn parts are likely to cause trouble - that’s where our experience and expertise come into play. At First Gearboxes we offer a 12-month Parts and Labour warranty.
A Reconditioned transmission usually costs more than a rebuilt transmission but will last longer. When an automatic transmission is reconditioned All the parts that are placed on a rebuilt transmission are replaced including seals and gaskets and the whole unit is carefully cleaned. In addition, the process also re-machines parts that are partly worn or the parts are replaced completely. .Once the transmission has been completely reconditioned, your vehicle’s transmission is dyno tested to check it operates correctly. Usually, Reconditioned Transmissions come with a one to 3-year Warranty
