Transmission Problems – Rebuild or Replace?
The words everyone dreads if they are a vehicle owner are ‘Your Transmission needs to be replaced’ Transmissions can
be very expensive because working with the transmission is extremely complex and there can be a lot of labour involved.
In some cases, you can be lucky and the Transmission may just need minor repairs but when the Transmission has
properly failed, In most cases, you have two choices when you replace the transmission on a vehicle. The transmission
can be rebuilt or you can install a new (replacement) transmission. So, which of these is the best option?
The answer is not always clear-cut.
To rebuild an Automatic or Manual Transmission it must be first taken apart and inspected. in most cases, this means
taking the Transmission out of your vehicle and working on a benchtop for easy access. Damaged parts are replaced
and the transmission is returned to fully functional operation. Usually, gaskets and rubber parts are replaced, in some
instances worn mechanical moving parts are replaced as part of the rebuilding process. It’s usually a complex process
and requires experience and specialist training. Rebuilding a transmission can give you the option of replacing components
with up-to-date parts that manufacturers have designed to be more efficient and safe
so in some cases this can upgrade your transmission
have a full depth of transmission work experience. FORTUNATELY at First Gearboxes, you’ll get that in spades.

Replacing your Transmission, is it viable?
In most cases, you’ll have a lot of trouble finding a replacement Transmission. Generally what is available are
Reconditioned Manual or Auto Transmissions. Reconditioned transmissions are similar to a rebuilt transmission,
generally though are set to factory settings (how they were set when the vehicle was new) This solution is less
labour intensive, generally, it’s just a matter of taking out your old gearbox or transmission and reinstalling the
reconditioned unit. With this option, we can’t install upgraded parts and componentry as you can with a rebuilt unit.
